Key facts

An orchid whose flower spike is pyramidal initially, later more cylindrical, growing in well-drained chalky soils

Up to 60cm tall with a spike of 50-100 tightly packed flowers, usually pink but occasionally white

Abundant in suitable habitats such as chalk downs, cliff tops or abandoned quarries
